Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Makes 'Community Commitment' Donation

(LUBEC, ME) September 3, 2008 - Through their Community Commitment program, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust makes meaningful donations to local, non-profit community organizations each month. A recipient for Community Commitment dollars is chosen monthly by a different Bank location. The funds are made possible through the generosity of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust employees, who in exchange for being able to dress casually on Fridays, voluntarily pay into a charitable fund. The Bank matches the employee donations, doubling the amount given to the chosen charity.

For the month of July, the Lubec branch of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust chose the Dennis Lewia Memorial Fund at the Regional Medical Center at Lubec (RMCL) to be the beneficiary of the Bank's Community Commitment program. RMCL provides and coordinates quality health care and social services, and promotes good health, in Lubec and the surrounding communities. "We are very excited to receive this generous donation," said Sally McKinnon, Chief Operating Officer at RMCL. The fund was established in 2008 in memory of Dennis Lewia.

Dennis Lewia was a Physicians Assistant and began his more than 30-year career at RMCL working with the founding physician. Committed to patient care, Dennis would see patients any time, day or place needed. "Dennis was known to even go to people's homes in the middle of the night to deal with a health issue. Time and location wasn't important to him, patient access to care was. He was a remarkable man," said Sally. RMCL will use this donation to help people access healthcare and to purchase new equipment to improve diagnostics. Additional donations to the fund can be made payable to the Dennis Lewia Memorial Fund at RMCL and mailed to 43 South Lubec Road, Lubec, Maine 04652.

HealthWays/RMCL, Inc. is a federally qualified community health center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration by the Bureau of Primary Health Care, and has been providing health services since 1971 in a service area that includes Lubec, Cutler, Whiting, Trescott, Dennysville, Edmunds, and Campobello Island, NB. Additional specific services, such as counseling, are provided in Eastport, Calais, and Machias. In addition, a school-based health center is located in SAD #19-Lubec Consolidated School.
