Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Newport Branch Renovation Project Begins
Newport, New Hampshire (August 30, 2018) – Bar Harbor Bank & Trust is excited to renovate the interior of their office located at 9 Main Street in Newport. The work commenced on Monday, August 20 with an expected completion date of March 2019. A complete interior makeover of the branch lobby is planned, transforming it into a bright, modern and inviting space. During renovations, branch operations and office hours will remain the same without interruption.
“With this project, we are making a significant investment in the customer and employee experience, as well as the building itself,” said Curtis Simard, President and CEO of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. “Newport is such an important community to our institution. The renovation will enable us improve our customers’ branch experience and improve the working environment for current employees. Additionally, the increased usable space will enable us to add more employees in this location, which serves as a hub for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust operations in New Hampshire.”
“I am very excited about the renovation of the branch,” said Terri Spanos, VP Branch Manager in Newport, who has been with the bank since 1986. “The new floor plan will enable us to greet customers directly when they come in the doors and provide a clear path for customers to receive service,” said Spanos. “The new design offers additional safety and privacy features, and upgraded equipment will increase transaction speed.”
The community will be pleased to know that the Dexter antique fire apparatus will be re-positioned, front and center, in the new branch lobby. Dating back to 1815, this hand drawn tub-pumper required 18-20 people to operate. It is owned by the Newport Fire Department and was retired from service in 1833 and fully restored. Since 1994, 9 Main Street, Newport has been its home. The Dexter is an important part of Newport’s history and will continue to be on display for all to enjoy.
Local contractors chosen for the project include: Jewett Construction (General Contractor), A.S. Bartlett & Sons Inc. (electrician), Biron’s Flooring, Claremont Glassworks Inc., Pinnacle Painting Inc., Granite State Plumbing and Heating, and Hampshire Fire Protection. The renovations encompass the first floor and lower level of the building. Many of the building systems will be updated including security, HVAC and electrical. Some energy efficiency improvements such as the installation of a new HVAC system and LED lighting qualify for New Hampshire Energy Efficiency rebates.
“This Main Street building in Newport is a historic landmark dating back to 1873,” said Steve Ensign, whose career with the bank started in 1971 and continues today, serving on the board of directors at Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. Known as the Richards Block, the exterior of the building will not be impacted by the renovations and will maintain its historic appearance. Shedding more light on the building’s fascinating legacy, Ensign shared, “From the late 1800s through the 1960s, Newport Savings Bank (the origin of Lake Sunapee Bank and today’s Bar Harbor Bank & Trust) and First National Bank of Newport not only shared one of the five store fronts but also shared the vault and teller line! During that era, the other four tenants included a men’s wear store, women’s wear store, a hardware store, and a pharmacy with a soda fountain. The building was gutted by fire in the early 1900s. By the 1980s the bank owned and occupied the entire building. The last time it was renovated was in the mid-1990s.”
The renovation plan divides the first floor into two sections. Phase 1 work will begin on the right side, where office space for 30 employees will be constructed. Phase two includes construction of a new Customer Service Center and break room on the lower level. Lastly, in early December, work will begin on the left side of the first floor. During this time a temporary branch arrangement will be created for serving customers, and access to safe deposit boxes will be limited to certain hours of the day. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience due to the construction work including dust and noise.
